This is according to experts.
In terms of protecting yourself from the new coronavirus, wearing two masks at once may be better than one.
A number of politicians, including US Vice President Kamala Harris, were seen wearing two masks.
And renowned infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci recommends that Americans do the same every day.
Then, what is the "correct" way to wear a mask to prevent the corona virus?
Doctors as well as public health professionals say any protection is better than nothing.
"The right type of mask is one that is worn consistently over the nose and mouth whenever you are in a public space," says Dr. Matt Binnicker, President of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology.
"At this point, we should focus more on achieving that goal rather than worrying about double-use (masks)," he said in a Twitter chat titled #AskReuters.
Depending on the goal The
type and number of masks you need will depend on your goals, according to Dr. Josh Schiffer, professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
"It's important to hide effectively and consistently when in the highest risk environment for super-spread events," said two.
Schiffer recommends wearing a cloth mask when walking a pet dog, for example. And, upgrade to KN95, N95, or a double mask when going to the office, modern retail outlet, or clinic.
If you choose to layer a mask, here are some tips for you to consider:
Ingredients
"If worn properly, any mask will work," said Lawrence Gostin, director of the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University.
However, the material and size of the mask can make a bigger difference than the amount you wear.
"Double masks are not clear because we don't know the type of material or the fitting," said Gostin noting that surgical masks and KN95 work better.
Experts agree, an effective face mask must have multiple layers.
"Currently, the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends wearing one face mask with two to three layers," says Dr. Raed Dweik, Chair of the Cleveland Clinical Respiratory Institute.
"If your mask already has multiple layers, there's no need to wear a double mask," he said.
Use of masks
When wearing a double mask, Dr. Charles Holmes, Director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health at Georgetown University, recommends wearing the most effective on the inside.
For example, you should wear a surgical mask over a KN95 mask, or a cloth mask over a surgical mask.
However, Holmes' greatest piece of advice is to cover your face, whatever the shape. "The best masks are the ones you wear consistently and correctly," he said.
